Pathogens are microscopic organisms that cause harm, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi., Our body has non specific defences such as our skin, the mucus in our airways and the acid in our stomachs., If these defences fail the white blood cells act as the soldiers of our bodies, there are lots of different types., They can recognise antigens on the surface of our cells and don't attack them., Foreign pathogens have anitgens they don't recognise so our white blood cells attack them., They produce antibodies which can destroy the pathogens or clump them together., They produce antitoxins to protect us from the toxins produced by bacteria., They can engulf and digest pathogens to destroy them, this is called phagocytosis.,
