Katniss Everdeen lives in a dystopian future where the country - formerly known as the U.S.A. - is divided into twelve districts and the Capitol. She lives in the poorest district. She regularly sneaks out beyond the fence to poach whatever game she can for food or trade., Most people in the districts struggle to survive whereas the people in the capitol live a life of luxury and leisure. Every year, as a reminder of the past rebellion, the capitol forces the districts to participate in the Hunger Games where 24 contestants must fight to the death in a televised event., During the "reaping" - the selection of the participants - Katniss's younger sister, Prim is selected as the female tribute from district 12. Katniss volunteers to take her place and save her., Katniss and Peeta enter the Hunger Games after a short stay in the Capitol where they trained and were put on display for the audience., Katniss surprises viewers and game-makers with her quick thinking and unexpected acts of compassion. Katniss and Peeta win over the hearts of the viewers thanks to their "romance"., After allowing two winners from the same district, the game-makers finally reverse their decision. Katniss and Peeta pretend to nearly eat poisonous berries to beat them at their own game. Because the Capitol needs a winner for the games, Katniss and Peeta are both declared winners.
