Exposition, Jim and Della are poor and live in a small apartment in New York City., Jim barely makes enough money to pay the rent, It's Christmas eve, Rising Action, Della is crying because she doesn't have enough money to buy Jim a present for Christmas, She thinks of way to get money to buy the perfect gift for her beloved one, Della looks at her hair and has an idea, Climax, Della visits Mrs. Safronie's shop and offers her hair for money, Mrs. Safronie buys Della's hair for 20 dollars and cuts her hair, Della leaves the shop to seek for a gift, Falling Action, After searching around for hour, Della finds the perfect gift: a golden chain for Jim's pocket watch, Della tries her best to fix her hair before Jim arrives home, Della is worried tha Jim will not love her anymore due to her appearance, Resolution, Jim arrives and looks Della with disappointment, Della is worried, Jim might not like what she did, Della explains what she did, and Jim explains his expression was because she bought her the combs she desired, Jim confesses that he sold the watch to buy the combs, Both gifts are useless for the time being., They sit and have dinner. They have a more valuable gift.
