Articles of Confederation (1777-1787), This was the first constitution for the United States. It only lasted 10 years because it had many weaknesses. It took 9 of 13 states to pass any law., Constitutional Convention (1787), Delegates met in Philadelphia to discuss revising the Articles. Delegates decides the Articles of Confederation needed to much revising so they decided to rewrite a whole new government., Federalist, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay wanted a strong central government. This meant the government would be limited but would still have enough power to govern efficiently., Anti-federalist, Patrick Henry, George Mason, Sam Adams wanted a weak Government. Wanted to keep Articles or add a bill of rights so people’s rights would not be taken away. Wanted more rights to protect people., Virginia Plan, Big States. Number of seats in Government would depend on population. This meant the bigger the state the more people that would represent that state in Congress., New Jersey Plan, Small States. They wanted equal representation in government no matter the population., Great Compromise, Delegates agreed to adopt both plans and create a two house Government. The House of representatives where the number of representatives is based on population and the senate where each state gets equal representation., ⅗ Compromise, A compromise was made to count slaves as 3/5ths of a person for purpose of setting taxes or determining a state’s population., Legislative, Makes the laws, Executive, Enforces or carries out the laws, Judicial, Tells us what law means, House of Representatives, Representation depends on population, Senate, Each state has 2 representatives.
