Can incorporate metaphors and similies, often colloquial. e.g. how the tables have turned - Idiom, A word that magnifies an unpleasant meaning. E.g. bit the dust (instead of die) - Dysphemism, A word that masks an unpleasant meaning e.g. pass away (instead of die) - Euphemism, Refers to a non-literal comparison or connection. e.g. That is just the icing on the cake. - Metaphor (Semantic Patterning), Refers to the way we can make inanimate objects out to be like animals by attributing actions and movements to them. e.g. the shadows taunted me - Animation (Semantic Patterning), Something completely opposite to what is meant or what is the reality of the situation. e.g. Fantastic weather (when it is raining) - Irony (Semantic Patterning), When the intended meaning of a particular lexeme with more than one meaning, is unclear. e.g. There's a bat. - Lexical Ambiguity (Semantic Patterning), An object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes. e.g. 'The camera loves me' - Personification (Semantic Patterning), Combines opposite or contradictory terms in a phrase.
