Rosa Parks was born in 1913 in Alabama, SO during the Jim Crow Era., Rosa's parents were former slaves WHEREAS Rosa herself was born free., UNLIKE her parents, Rosa wasn't born a slave., Rosa was an African American woman WHO lived in the segregated South., In Alabama, WHICH was a southern state, most public spaces were segregated., EVEN IF she was born free, her life was hard BECAUSE she lived in the segregated South., She was born free. HOWEVER, Jim Crow Laws made her life quite hard., She attended a school for blacks only BECAUSE schools were segregated in Alabama., She worked as a seamstress and she ALSO worked as a secretary for the NAACP, WHICH was an association defending the rights of colored people., In 1932, she met Raymond Parks and they married SHORTLY AFTER., She was an activist WHO wanted to challenge legal segregation., FOR EXAMPLE, ONE DAY she was asked to give her seat to a white person BUT she refused SO she was arrested., Segregation existed in the South BECAUSE OF the "separate but equal" doctrine., NOT ONLY was she arrested BUT she was ALSO fined $14., TO show support, colored people organized a bus boycott WHICH lasted for more than one year., Legal segregation was challenged THANKS TO people like Rosa Parks.,
