Stage 1: Prebuilding - In this stage, children often experience blocks as sensory material. So, they will bang the blocks, taste the blocks, and fill containers with blocks, dumping them out or carrying them around. This important stage helps children learn about the weight and physical properties of blocks., Stage 2: Rows and Towers - In this stage, children build horizontal or vertical rows. There is a lot of repetition at this stage. When they first begin, they will place the blocks directly in front of each other, placed side-by-side in rows or towers. As they advance in this stage, they may make adjoining towers that are connected by a row of blocks. The children may use the row of blocks as roads. By age 3, most children will be exhibiting this stage or beyond., Stage 3: Bridging - This stage refers to children placing two blocks close together and then balancing another block as a roof between the blocks., Stage 4: Enclosures - This stage involves creating a closed space. Most children will be building these closed structures by age four. At this stage, children will be able to clearly differentiate indoor and outdoor space as they build., Stage 5: Patterns - In this stage, children begin to use symmetry in their building and decorative patterns may emerge., Stage 6: Naming of Structures and Early Representation  - Children at this stage use everything they have learned in previous stages. Unlike earlier stages, where children may name a structure because an adult asked them, children have intention about what they are building before they begin to build. They also begin to use the building for dramatic play., Stage 7: Reproduction - Children at this stage actually recreate buildings and structures they have seen. Children at this stage also use their structures in dramatic play. By age 7, most children have progressed to the point that they can coordinate interior space with interior objects. They also can include exterior landmarks that are of appropriate scales and that portray relationships with the building.,
