Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen., Have you heard of an Aussie who has flown a helicopter around the world, sold TVs and started a food company? His name is Dick Smith, and he’s very well-known in Australia. Actually, he’s also controversial because he has some very strong ideas., This afternoon I’m going to talk about Dick Smith’s achievements., In this presentation I aim to cover three main aspects of his life: his aviation achievements, his electronics business and his support for Australian companies., First, I’ll talk about Dick Smith’s flights in planes and helicopters., Smith learnt to fly in 1972 and then he was the first person to carry tourists over Antarctica. He made the first helicopter flight around the world in 1983, and was also the first person to make a helicopter flight to the North Pole. Smith has made many other incredible journeys and has inspired people to aim high in whatever they are doing., The next point I would like to look at is Smith’s electronics business., This was his first business, which he founded in 1968, starting with taxi radio repairs and then moving on to car radios and later computers and many electronic gadgets. In fact, this is how he became a household name. He even started branches of his company in Hong Kong and the USA, but eventually sold the business to Woolworths., I’ve talked about Smith’s flying and his first business. Now let’s move on to how Smith has supported Australian companies., Over the years many Australian businesses have been bought by foreign companies, including Arnott’s, Vegemite, Aeroplane Jelly and Speedo. Smith was always concerned about profits from these going overseas, so he founded Dick Smith Foods, which helped sell foods made by Australian-owned companies. For example, he sold a product called Temptin’ chocolate biscuits which are just the same as Tim Tams but with a slightly different name., To sum up, I’ve talked about three things that Dick Smith is famous for – flying, electronics and Aussie companies., He has tried to show people that they can achieve great things, and that there are solutions to problems in our country., Would anyone like to ask any questions?.
