Protein and glycoprotien synthesis occurs in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER). Some of these proteins and glycoproteins remain within the ER, Secretory product are packaged into transport vesicles that eventually bud off from ER. These transport vesicles then fuseto create the forming (cis) face of the Golgi apparatus  , Each cisterna physically moves from the forming face to the maturing face, carrying wit it its associated proteins. This process is called cisternal progression, The maturing (trans) face generates vesicles that carry modified protiens away from the Golgi apparatus.
