1) What is meant by the term network topology? a) Physical configuration of layout of network and how it is linked/ connected together b) A group of computers aharing resources and activities. c) A local area netwok linked to a wide area network. 2) Advantages of star topology a) Dependence on the central server/hub b) Load tolerant – extra computers can be added without much loss in performance because all computers have their own path to the server c) Each computer has the same access as the others so no one computer can hog the network 3) Disadvantage of star topology a) Break in cable and network won’t work. b) Dependence on the central server/hub c) Having a lot of machines can slow down performance. 4) Advantage of Ring topology a) Easy to add extra computers – extra computers can be added without disturbing the network b) Higher transmission speeds / Data flows in one direction only (so large volumes can be transmitted) c) Reduces installation time 5) Disadvantage of Ring topology a) Break in cable and network won’t work. b) Higher cost – the large amount of cabling needed makes it more expensive c) A break in the backbone will stop the network. 6) Advantage of a Bus topology a) Easy to add extra computers – extra computers can be added without disturbing the network b) No collisions c) less cabling is needed, because only one backbone 7) Disdvantage of a Bus topology a) A break in the backbone will stop the network. b) It is impossible to keep the network running whilst equipment is added or removed because there is only one path for the data to follow c) Higher cost – the large amount of cabling needed makes it more expensive
