Imagine you have to discuss something with another person and reach a conclusion. What makes someone a good discussion partner?, listening, asking opinions, disagreeing politely, adding ideas, deciding together., You and your friend are choosing where to go on holiday. You have said: “I think Italy would be the best option because there’s so much to see.” Now you want your partner to speak. What do you say/ask?, INVITE: What’s your take on that? / How do you see it? / Would you be inclined to agree, or do you see it differently?, Your partner says: “Working from home is better because you save commuting time.” You agree, but you want to develop their idea instead of just saying “I agree.” What could you say?, BUILD: Absolutely, and I think that point could be taken a step further, because… / That’s a very good point, and another factor worth taking into account is… / I’d agree, and I think what’s particularly significant here is that…, Your partner says: “Social media is bad for teenagers.” You partly agree, but you think that statement is too strong. What could you say?, EVALUATE: I’d agree up to a point, although I think that’s perhaps a little too sweeping. / There’s certainly some truth in that, but I’m not sure it applies across the board. / I can see where you’re coming from, although I think the issue is rather more nuanced than that., Your partner says: “People are happier if they earn more money.” You disagree, but you want to challenge the idea politely. What could you say?, CHALLENGE: I’m not entirely convinced that necessarily follows. / I’m not sure I’d go quite that far, particularly when you consider… / I’d question whether that relationship is quite as straightforward as it might seem., You are discussing studying online and studying in person. You want to compare the two options rather than simply say which one is better. What could you say?, COMPARE: Whereas online learning tends to offer greater flexibility, face-to-face teaching arguably provides richer opportunities for spontaneous interaction. / Compared with online learning, classroom-based study can be considerably more demanding in terms of time, but potentially more engaging socially. / The key distinction, as I see it, is that one prioritises flexibility whereas the other places greater emphasis on direct interaction., A man comes out of an office carrying a cardboard box full of his belongings. You don’t actually know what has happened. How could you talk about the situation with your partner without stating anything as a fact?, SPECULATE: He may well have been made redundant, although it’s equally possible that he’s simply changing offices. / Judging by the box he’s carrying, he could conceivably be leaving the company altogether. / It would appear that something fairly significant has happened, though we can only speculate as to exactly what., You and your partner have discussed three ways to improve your town: a small park, a youth centre and better street lighting. Now you need to start moving towards a joint decision. What could you say?, NEGOTIATE: So, would it be fair to say we’re leaning towards the youth centre? / Taking everything into account, shall we go with the youth centre as our strongest option? / Would you agree that, on balance, the youth centre seems to offer the greatest overall benefit?, You and a colleague are discussing whether a new project should be launched immediately or delayed until more data is available. After considering the advantages and risks of both options, you want to bring the discussion to a clear conclusion. What could you say?, CONCLUDE: All things considered, I think delaying the launch is probably the more prudent course of action. / On balance, I’d say we have a stronger case for waiting until we have more reliable data. / Taking everything into account, I think we can reasonably conclude that postponing the launch would be the most sensible option. / So, having weighed up both sides, I’d be inclined to hold off for the time being. / Overall, I think the arguments in favour of delaying the launch are ultimately more convincing.
