Who is Saint Patrick? He is a [patron] saint of Ireland. Surprisingly, he is not [Irish] at all. He was born into a [well-off] family in Roman Britain in the late 4th [century]. His name was Maewyn Succat. At the [age] of 16 his good fortune changed - he was kidnapped and taken as a [slave] to Ireland where he was a [shepherd] for several years. It was during this time that he became [religious]. , Turning to religion During his time in Ireland, Maewyn [prayed] a lot. It is said that he had heard [voices] in his head telling him to run [away]. And so he did. He managed to [reunite] with his family but decided to [become] a priest. The voices [urged] him to go back to Ireland and convert the Irish. During his life time he [established] many monasteries, churches and schools. His path was difficult and [challenging]. Very often he was beaten and [imprisoned]. He [died] on March 17, 461, almost forgotten. , Legends, symbols and celebrations Many legends are connected to Saint Patrick. One has it that he drove the [snakes] out of Ireland! Shamrocks, the three-leaved [clovers], are the well-known symbol of Saint Patrick's Day and they represent [the Holy Trinity]. It was in the 17th century that the celebrations really began - [secular] celebrations in parades and pubs. People dress in [green], sing Irish songs, drink green beer and eat [traditional] food - corned beef with cabbage and potatoes. .
