Many of Edinburgh’s old tenements were built in late 18th/early 19th century and require costly renovation, e.g. Fort Housing, Some high rise tower blocks were built quickly and cheaply and some are in a state of disrepair, Homelessness has increased in the city partly due to a lack of affordable social housing, There is pressure to build more housing on green belt land at the edge of the city (1) which could lead to habitat destruction and further urban sprawl (1)​, The average house prices in Edinburgh are high, many young people struggle to afford a first home due to the rising housing costs, The private rental market has increased and many young people and families now rent and struggle to save enough to buy a house, Some rented properties are not invested in properly by landlords who cut corners and therefore the housing quality is poor, Scotland’s ageing population has led to a lack of affordable family homes in the city, An increased capacity at Edinburgh’s universities has led to a demand in student accommodation in the city
