Four Millimetres, By midnight, the readings had failed twice. Priya Patel checked the gauge on Fenwick Crossing a third time: the north joint showed an increase in movement of four millimetres since Tuesday, and nothing in the weather could account for it., In nine hours, three hundred people would follow the mayor across it for the anniversary. Nobody else was aware of the reading., Her manager, Owen, said sensors drifted, and drift wasn’t grounds for cancelling a ceremony the council had promised the press. Priya didn’t think the shift depended on the sensor., The maintenance log told her why: eighteen months earlier, a contractor had fitted bolts that didn’t comply with the spec, saving six weeks and forty thousand pounds — never reported., Everyone assumed overload — detour traffic contributing to a load the deck was never built for. But the pattern wasn’t consistent with a heavy lorry; it was consistent with resonance, which could result in exactly this., The real cause derived from six lanes of people walking in step, an effect on the deck nobody tests for, because nobody expects a wedding march to be susceptible to physics., At 4am she rang Owen again and said the word he didn’t want: closed. Off the record, he told her this was the last bridge she’d ever inspect if she was wrong., She sent the order anyway, twenty minutes before the barrier crew arrived., The mayor’s office moved the ceremony to the north bank and called it a change of scenery. The real reason for the closure reached the papers four days later, when the joint failed under a load one-tenth the weight of a crowd in step., Owen never apologised. He just stopped giving her the easy bridges, and started sending her every joint that made no sense to anyone else.
