1) He was born on March 17, 1919, in Montgomery, Alabama 2) He first learned to play the piano at the age of four with help of his mother, a church choir director 3) He became the first African American performer to host a variety TV series in 1956. 4) The 1950s was a difficult decade for African American entertainers. He had been attacked by white supremacists during a mixed race performance in Alabama 5) He's best known for his soft baritone voice and for singles like "The Christmas Song," "Mona Lisa" "Sweet Lorraine" "Ramblin" 6) He comes from a humble family. Son of Edward and Perlina Coles. He had three brothers: Eddie, Ike and Freddy, and a half-sister, Joyce.
