“My brother's school changed its schedule last year, and he still complained about being tired every morning. He actually started staying up later because he knew he didn't have to get up as early. His school ended up changing a bunch of other things too, so it's hard to know what really helped. I don't think moving the start time is going to solve much if students don't change their habits.”, Schools should not rely on starting later to solve students' tiredness, “At first, students would probably only use it when they're stuck. Then someone would realise it can rewrite their paragraph, and another person would ask it to finish the whole thing. Once that's normal, teachers will have to check everything much more carefully. Eventually students could hand in work they barely understand, and we'd have no idea what they're actually capable of.”, Allowing students to use AI for small amounts of help could eventually undermine independent work, “There are already enough arguments in schools about what's acceptable. Someone complains about a hairstyle, then someone else complains about a shirt, and suddenly teachers are spending ten minutes deciding whether something is against the rules. Students aren't going to agree about every boundary, and parents will have their own opinions too. Maybe it's better not to give people another area where everyone has to argue about what's allowed.”, Schools should avoid giving students more freedom over clothing, “My parents have always said they should be able to reach me during the day, especially if something unexpected happens. And honestly, the bigger problem seems to be how much time young people spend online anyway. Social media is designed to keep people checking their screens, and that's something schools should probably be talking about. Taking away one particular device for part of the day doesn't seem like it gets to the real issue.”, Students should still be allowed access to their phones during part of the school day, “A few students in my class already complain when there's too much homework. If the amount keeps dropping, they'll probably start expecting less and less. Then bigger assignments will feel like a huge deal because they aren't used to working outside class. Before long, students might start thinking anything that takes effort should be finished during school.”, Schools should not keep reducing homework, “The sports hall needs repairs, the science lab is missing equipment, and teachers have been asking for better classroom resources for years. There are plenty of things students actually use every day that need attention. Some people might say that adding more green spaces would make the school nicer, but I'm not sure that should come first when so many basic things still need fixing.”, The school should prioritize repairing and improving existing facilities over adding green spaces, “You can already see what happens when students sit together. They start talking, then somebody gets moved, and suddenly everyone wants to know why that person got a different seat. Give everyone the choice and you'll have friendship groups forming everywhere. Teachers will spend more time sorting out the classroom than actually teaching.”, Students should not be given complete freedom to choose their seats, “A lot of students don't get enough exercise, but that's probably more about what happens after school. Some spend the whole evening gaming, while others have tutoring or music lessons. Parents also have completely different schedules, so getting everyone to do more activities outside school isn't easy. Adding another sports session during the school day might not actually solve that.”, Schools should not assume that adding another sports session will solve students' lack of exercise, “Once students get used to having an extra day without lessons, they'll probably want the same arrangement every year. Then schools will have to decide what happens to all the material that used to fit into five days. Teachers may start rushing through lessons, students could have less time to practise, and eventually the school might be trying to squeeze an entire week's learning into a schedule that simply doesn't have enough room.”, Schools should be cautious about moving to a four-day school week, “There are already plenty of ways students can show what they know. They have projects, class discussions, homework, practical work, and all sorts of activities. Some students are nervous speaking in front of everyone anyway, and teachers have to spend time managing presentations. Maybe the bigger question is whether we're giving students enough time to actually learn instead of constantly asking them to demonstrate it.”, Schools should not increase the use of presentations as a way to assess students
