Ableism - The systematic oppression of people with (perceived) disabilities; is based on the assumption that there is a physical, intellectual, and emotional standard for human beings and that this standard is the only one accepted as normal., Assimilation - The process of losing one's cultural identity in order to become part of, or fit into, a new cultural group., Critical Friend - Someone who supports your development as a culturally responsive individual/professional; provides support, encouragement and friendly critique., Culture - The norms, values, practices, patterns of communication, language, laws, customs, and meanings shared by a group of people located in a given time and place., Discrimination - Actions based on prejudice., Diversity - The differences between people due to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, language, ability, sexual orientation, religion, and so forth., Gender - The socially prescribed and enforced roles, behaviors, and expectations that are assigned to male and female bodies., Gender Identity - The development of one's self as a male, female, or gender non-conforming, Hegemony - The imposition of dominant group ideology onto everyone in society. It then is difficult to difficult to escape or resist "believing in" this dominant ideology, thus social control is achieved through conditioning., Minority Group - A social group that is devalued in society. This devaluing encompasses how the group is represented, what degree access to resources it is granted, and how the unequal access is rationalized., Multiculturalism - The view that the various cultures in society merit equal respect and scholarly interest. It emphasizes awareness and appreciation for the contributions of different cultures., Cisgender - Denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex., Non-binary - Any gender that is not exclusively male or female., Oppression - The discrimination of one social group against another, backed by institutional power; occurs when one group is able to enforce its prejudice throughout society because it controls the institutions., Prejudice - Learned prejudgment about members of social groups to which we don't belong; based on limited knowledge and experience with the group; simplistic judgments and assumptions are made and projected onto everyone from that group., Transgender - A person who feels that their gender does not match the sex category given at birth (male or female); they may feel themselves to be neither like a woman or a man, that they are a combination of both genders, or that their gender is opposite to their sex., Gender Dysphoria - Distress a person experiences as a result of the sex and gender they were assigned at birth., Racism - In the U.S. and Canada refers to White racial and cultural prejudice and discrimination, supported by institutional power and authority, used to the advantage of Whites and the disadvantage of people of Color; encompasses economic, political, social and institutional actions and beliefs that perpetuate an unequal distribution of privileges and resources., White - People whose ancestry is or is perceived to be from Europe. While there is no true biological races, being perceived as White has very real privileges., Dominant Group - The group at the top of the social hierarchy. In any relationship between groups that define each other, this group is the group that is valued more highly; set the norms by which other groups are judged; have greater access to resources of the society and benefit from the existence of inequality.,
