contour index is usually every 5th line with assigned values of elevation, contour line represents points of equal elevation on a map, contour interval equals 10 which is the difference in elevation between each contour line, contour lines close together indicate a steep slope, V-shape contour lines point upstream and indicate Maple Stream is flowing south.
