All living things are made up of cells., All living things contain similar chemicals., All living things use energy., All living things grow and develop., All living things respond to their surroundings., All living things reproduce., Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living things., Most cells are so tiny you need a microscope to see them., Unicellular organisms are made up of one cell., Multicellular organisms are made up of multiple cells., The cells of all living things are composed of chemicals., The most common chemical in cells is water., Carbohydrates are the energy source for cells., Proteins and lipids are the building materials of cells., Nucleic acids are the genetic materials of cells., Cells use energy in order to grow and repair injured parts., Cells are always hard at work and use lots of energy., Growth means increasing in size., Development means increasing in complexity., If something changes in an organism's environment, living things will respond to that change., A stimulus is a change in the environment., A response is an action or change in behavior in reaction to a stimulus., Reproduce means to create offspring that are similar to the parents., Asexual reproduction is reproduction involving only one parent. The offspring are identical to the parent., Sexual reproduction is reproduction involving two parents. The offspring are a combination of both parents., Living things need energy to survive., Living things need water to survive., Living things need living space to survive., Living things need stable internal conditions to survive., All organisms use food as their energy source., Organisms differ in the way they obtain food., Autotrophs are organisms that make their own food., Heterotrophs are organisms that need to obtain food., Most animals are made of at least 70% water., Most substances dissolve in water and can be easily transported throughout the body., All organisms need a place to live to give them food, water, and shelter., Only a limited number of organisms can live in any one location. That is why animals defend their territory., Competition is the struggle among living things for food, water, shelter, or mates., Because conditions in the environment can change so much, organisms must be able to keep conditions inside their body constant., Homeostatis is the ability of an organism to keep conditions inside its body the same, even though conditions in the environment change., Warm blooded animals maintain a constant body temperature., Cold blooded animals have a body temperature that changes with the outside temperature.,
