Reasons that led to migrants coming to Singapore: Free Port, Free Immigration, Excellent Geographical Location, Diverse Job Prospects, Poor Living Conditions in countries of origin, Ease of Travel, Evidence: Bugis traders were attracted to Singapore as the Dutch took control of the East indies and its trade routes and imposed taxes on these routes., Many unskilled labourers such as coolie workers and Samsui women could come and go as they pleased without having to pay or apply for permission. It was also beneficial for merchants and traders who came as regularly as they liked to conduct trade and businesses., Singapore is strategically located at the opening of the straits of Melaka and it is also situated in the middle of the trade route between China and India. Thus, it served as convenient stop-over ports for ships, resupplying food, water and repairs., The British set up agency houses that required middlemen, usually Peranakan Chinese, to help them conduct their businesses. Specialised skills such as accounting, banking and credit were required to develop a commercial port. This was usually led by the Chettiars. Unskilled labour was needed to facilitate activities along the port., Countries such as China and India were affected by unrest and instability causes by wars, rebellions and lawlessness in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Many Arabs easily moved from Hadhramaut to Singapore due to technological advancements such as the invention of steam engine. In addition, the Suez Canal opened in 1869., Explanation: This was attractive to the migrants because they need not pay taxes to enter Singapore. This allowed many of the traders and merchants to earn some savings which in turn would have led to them earning more profits. Thus, traders were keen to come to Singapore to trade., This was attractive to the migrants especially the unskilled labourers as they need not spend extra money or source for money to enter Singapore. Thus, there were many opportunities for the migrants to work in Singapore hence influencing them to come to Singapore., This caused the migrants to come to Singapore as they wanted to end their sufferings in their homelands and seek for a better life elsewhere. Thus, they chose to come to Singapore., This was attractive to the migrants because it made their journey to Singapore much shorter and easier. Thus, many chose to make the journey to Singapore.,
