1) If both parents/carers are registered on the birth certificate, then both parents/carers have parental responsibility for their child. 2) The mother has parental responsibility automatically and so does the father if married to the mother. If the father is not married to the mother but is named on the child's birth certificate, he has parental responsibility for the child. 3) Even if the parents/carers separate, their parental responsibility remains the same. 4) Carers and adoptive parents/carers may have parental responsibility. 5) Foster parents/carers cannot have parental responsibility.
