A small area of forest is cleared by chopping down trees, They burn the trees and vegetation, The ash left over from burning the trees adds nutrients to the soil, Seeds can now be grown in the new clearing in the fertile soil, Crops grow well for 2-3 years, After 2-3 years the soil loses it’s fertility (nutrients) and the crops no longer grown, People move to another part of the forest and start again, The trees start to slowly re-grow in the clearing.
