Apocrine Glands - glands located in the armpit and pubic areas which secrete sweat and protein compounds and begin to function after puberty, Arrector pili muscle - tiny skin muscle that contracts to pull on hairs causing them to stand, Blood vessels - tubes that carry blood through the skin & deeper into the body; arteries & veins, Dermis - layer of skin between the epidermis and hypodermis; includes nerve endings, glands, and hair follicles, Eccrine Glands - secrete sweat in order to cool the body, Epidermal Dendritic Cells - skin cells that initiate an immune system response to the presence of foreign bacteria or viruses, Epidermis - the thin, outermost layer of the skin, Hair - thread-like out growth of protein, Hair Follicle - the covering at the base of a hair; helps to nourish & grow the hair, Hair Shaft - the top section of hair superficial to the skin, Hypodermis - consists of loose connective tissue and adipose tissue which insulates the body, known as the subcutaneous layer, Integumentary System - enveloping organ of the body that includes the epidermis, dermis, sudoriferous and sebaceous glands, and nails and hair, Keratin - a tough protein found in the skin, hair, and nails, Keratinocytes - produce keratin, which gives skin its strength and flexibility, Langerhans’ Cells - outermost guards that induce the first reactions against pathogens, Lipocytes - fat cells that store energy; adipocytes, Melanin - a pigment that protects the body against the harmful effects of ultraviolet ray damage from the sun, Melanocytes - produce melanin, the dark pigment which gives skin its color, Merkel’s Cells - cells involved in touch reception which are located in the Epidermis, Nerve Fibers - the connections between nerve receptors that lead to the body's nervous system, Perspiration - sweat, Sebaceous glands - glands primarily on the scalp, face and upper portion of the body which secrete secretes sebum - fats and proteins that function to prevent drying of skin and hair, Sebum - the skin’s natural oil and helps make the skin water proof, Sudoriferous glands - sweat glands that are distributed in the dermis over the entire body, Corpuscles - nerve receptors that can sense vibration, touch & pressure,
