Can incorporate metaphors and similies, often colloquial. e.g. how the tables have turned, Idiom, A word that magnifies an unpleasant meaning. E.g. bit the dust (instead of die), Dysphemism, A word that masks an unpleasant meaning e.g. pass away (instead of die), Euphemism, Refers to a non-literal comparison or connection. e.g. That is just the icing on the cake., Metaphor (Semantic Patterning), Refers to the way we can make inanimate objects out to be like animals by attributing actions and movements to them. e.g. the shadows taunted me, Animation (Semantic Patterning), Something completely opposite to what is meant or what is the reality of the situation. e.g. Fantastic weather (when it is raining), Irony (Semantic Patterning), When the intended meaning of a particular lexeme with more than one meaning, is unclear. e.g. There's a bat., Lexical Ambiguity (Semantic Patterning), An object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes. e.g. 'The camera loves me', Personification (Semantic Patterning), Combines opposite or contradictory terms in a phrase.
