lay 2 tape measures perpendicular to each other to make a grid, use a random number generator , to get a pair of numbers to use as coordinates, the first number relates to how many meters along the horizontal tape measure or x axis, the second number relates to how many meters along the vertical tape measure or y axis , there needs to be a person stood at each distance along the tape measure, these people walk towards each other, perpendicular to their tape measure, where they meet they place a quadrat on the ground, they count the number of a species within the quadrat, the repeat this process to get at least 10 quadrats samples, they calculate the average number of that species per quadrat, they multiply this by the number of times the quadrat can fit in the field (area of field divided by area of quadrat).
