Character - A person (or personified object or animal) in a literary work. They can be flat (static) or round (dynamic), Characterisation - The process/journey by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. This can be direct (stated) or implied (implied via speech, actions and appearance), Plot - Sequenced description of events that make up the main part of a story. Traditional plot follows this order: Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution., Climax - Often a turning point/pivotal moment - the most exciting, intense, or thrilling point in a literary work., Conflict - A struggle between two opposing forces. Internal struggles are mental. External struggles can be with other people, societies, or even nature., Flashback - An earlier event is symbolically inserted into the normal, chronological order of a narrative., Foreshadowing - An impending sense of calamity - serves as a warning to readers of incoming turning point., Mood - Words evoke feelings or sense through their meanings and effects. Setting, tone, and diction contribute heavily to this., Genre - A type of writing, marked by features or conventions. Examples are tragedy, romance, comedy, and drama, Motif - Dominant or reoccurring idea through a literary work, establishes clear ideas throughout., Narrative voice - First person narrator uses the "I". Second person narrator (lesson common) uses the "you". Third person narrator uses "he, she, it, they"., Protagonist - Leading character (usually likeable, sympathetic, and relatable), Antagonist - Opposition to the leading charater, Setting - The time and place in which the events take place, in literature. These are symbolic and intentional., Suspense - Arouses expectation or uncertainty, a wariness for the future., Theme - An idea that recurs in or pervades through a literary text. Examples are love and betrayal, man's relationship with nature, coming of age, dangers of ambition, friendship, religion, death and religion.,
