ASCII - A character set which uses 8 bits to represent 256 different characters. It is used for English and European languages., Binary - A base-2 number system which uses only two digits: 0 and 1, Binary shift - Moving a series of binary digits in a register a number of places to the left or the right., Bit depth - The number of bits used to record a sound sample., Bit rate - A measure of how much data (in terms of the number of bits) is processed for each second of sound. This will be equal to bit depth * sample frequency * number of channels., Bitmap - An image made of individual pixels arranged on a grid., Character code - A unique binary string which represents a given character in a character set., Character set - A complete set of the characters and their number codes that can be recognised by a computer system., Colour depth - The number of bits used per pixel in a bitmap image to represent the pixel's colour., Compression - Reducing the overall size of a file., Lossless compression - Reducing the size of a file without removing any of the original data., Lossy compression - Reducing the size of a file by removing some of the original data., Metadata - Data included in the file about the file itself e.g. file type, date file created, resolution I.e. 'data about data'., Overflow error - When a binary value has more digits than there are spaces in the register; extra bits 'flow out' of the register meaning the remaining digits in the register are not an accurate representation of the value., Pixel - A single dot or square of colour in a digital bitmap image or on a computer screen., Resolution - A way of describing how tightly packed or concentrated the pixels in an image are, Sample frequency / sample rate - The number of sound samples recorded per second. It is measured in Hertz (Hz)., Sampling - Taking recordings, at regular intervals, of the amplitude of an analogue sound wave and storing it as binary., Unicode - A character set which uses at least 16 bits to represent over 65,000 different characters.,
