It seeks to determine norms, ideals or standards, in this case, of human conduct and character. - ETHICS AS SCIENCE, It deals with the issue of the Good. - ETHICS AS BRANCH OF PHILOSOPHY, WHAT you study - MATERIAL OBJECT, ANGLE or PERSPECTIVE - FORMAL OBJECT, OBJECTIVE OF ETHICS - 1. Obtain true & systematic knowledge. 2. Establish series of norms and criteria., Basis of moral reasoning and root of moral distinctions. - ETHICS, Aware of basic principles. - ETHICAL , Unaware of basic principles. - UNETHICAL , Follows the moral rules. - MORAL , Breaks moral rules. Actions that conflict with generally held moral principles. - IMMORAL, Doesn't know/care moral rules. - AMORAL, Situations where moral categories of right and wrong cannot be applied. - NON-MORAL, Culturally dictated rules and guidelines of human behavior - MORAL CODES, Set of rules created by the person to live by as a result by their experiences. - PERSONAL MORAL CODE, Rules or norms a group have which govern the quality of human actions as morally acceptable or morally unacceptable. - MORAL STANDARDS, Standards or guidelines governed by a particular belief system that either lacks ethical sense. And shows preferences. - NON-MORAL STANDARDS, Concerned with the criteria for what is right or wrong. (Hedonism/Desire satisfactionism) - NORMATIVE ETHICS, Nature of moral judgment. (Cogni, Subj, Obj, Prescrip, Emotivism) - META-ETHICS, Contemporary and controversial topics. - APPLIED ETHICS, Belief of universal or objective moral principles exist. Moral judgment deemed to some degree. - ETHICAL OBJECTIVISM, Belief that it is acceptable for ethics and morality to differ among persons and societies - ETHICAL RELATIVISM, moral evaluation is rooted in and cannot be separated from exp, bel, & behav. - CULTURAL RELATIVISM, Values are determined by the society we grow up in. No universal values. And culture-to-culture. - MORAL RELATIVISM, Establish guiding principles and provide moral map/framework. Pinpoint a disagreement.
