Make sure you write your notes on a separate page/screen. Your goal is to separate the ideas and information that you want from the original text. If you only underline or highlight, you won’t remember why in couple of days and you’ll have to read everything again., Be clear about why you are taking notes. Do you have an assignment question or task? Are you establishing your understanding of a topic, refining your ideas/ understanding, looking for evidence to support an argument or something else?, Try to write in your own words as much as possible – if you can’t put it into your own words, then do you understand it?, Make sure that the links between ideas are clear (use words like so, but, and, thus, etc.)., Note down the title, author and publication information., Note down the page number you are taking notes from. Make sure you note down whenever you change page., Generally, don’t write in complete sentences unless they are your own words or they are marked clearly as quotations., Make clear the difference between the author’s own arguments and supporting evidence (using e.g. / i.e.)., If you do take down a quote, make it very clear in your notes that it is a quote (suggestion: highlight all quotes)..
