'can/could' are used to talk about general ability in present and the past.  - Ann can type fast., 'be able to' is used when we cannot use can/could - I might be able to do this later., 'be able to' is used to talk about ability in specific situation (=managed to) - I'm quite bad at running but last week I was able to run a marathon., 'ought to' is used for advice, which is based on law, rules or generally accepted ideas - You ought to treat animals kindly. , 'mustn't' is used to talk about the things that are forbidden - You mustn't leave the room during the test., 'have to' are used when sb other than the speaker has decided that sth is necessary.  - The doctor says I have to take these pills for a week. , 'don't have to' means 'it's not necessary but you can do it if you want to' = needn't=don't need to - You don't have to give that speech if you feel nervous, 'must' is used for a very strong advice - You must watch new Avatar.
