Computer networks can be really helpful because they allow people to share resources., This includes things like printers – rather than having one attached to every computer we can have one per classroom., This means that everyone can print without having to move their computer next to the printer and plugging in one at a time., Software can also be shared over a network too – this might mean that a network manager can install or update software remotely rather than having to go to each computer one at a time., It might also mean using cloud based software such as Office 365, Google Docs or iCloud rather than needing to have the software installed on your computer at all., Sharing an internet connection means that you only need one cable coming into the house or office, but everyone can get online., Imagine if your school had to pay for a separate internet connection for each computer!, One of the most important things to be able to share over a network is files and data., This might mean uploading work to be marked, downloading resources, or having access to your own files no matter which computer you log on to., Finally, networks allow us to communicate with each other., Emails, WhatsApp messages, photos – they allow us to keep in touch with each other and send messages about all sorts of things., But networks have downsides too., They cost money – for network equipment, for staff whose job it is to maintain the network hardware and for security software to keep the network safe., Malware (things like viruses) can spread much more easily over a network and some messages can be scams or tricks., On balance, having computer networks is pretty handy, and life wouldn’t be the same without them.,
