Magma rises towards the crust via convection currents, As the magma moves under the crust it drags the plates apart, In low pressure zones where large amounts of magma makes its way to the surface effusive volcanoes occur, As the plates move apart gentle earthquakes occur, This is know as a mid-ocean ridge.
