When Edward the Confessor died in 1066 leaving no heir, there were 3 rivals for the throne:, Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex; Harald of Hardrada, King of Norway; William, Duke of Normandy., So when Harold was named King, he expected problems from Harald and William. He gathered his troops on the south coast and waited for William’s attack…but no one came., Then, word arrived that Harald Hardrada’s Viking army had landed in the north so Harold Godwinson gathered his men and moved quickly north., Harold’s quick response surprised the Vikings and he defeated them at the battle of Stamford Bridge…killing Harald Hardrada., Soon after the battle, more news arrived…Now William, Duke of Normandy, had landed his army in the south so Harold went south to meet the Norman invaders., On 14 October AD 1066 at the battle of Hastings, the two armies faced off; Harold’s army defended in a good way against the well organized Normans…but king Harold was killed in the conflict., Some people say he was killed by a sword…others say he died when an arrow struck him in the eye. Harold’s exhausted troops were left without their leader and soon William had won the battle., William was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day in 1066. It marked the end of the Anglo-Saxon rule. A new period of British history started..
