Potato Blight 1846 - 150,000 people faced starvation due to the blight, Highland Clearances  - Landlords evicted tenants from land to make way for sheep farming, Traditon-Flittin fae ferm te ferm - Tradition to move every 6 months for farm work , Textiles in decline - Industrialisation destroyed textile industry in many villages such as Hawick and hand looming. , Excitement of towns and cities- Glasgow - Better wages, social life in dance halls and half day Wednesdays , Hatred of rural life - Farmer worked changed their attitudes- long hours and boring jobs- wanted change, Reaper and Thresher (Farming) - New farm machinery meant it only took 12 man days to tend an acre of barley compared to 22 days in 1840 , End of Kelp (Decline) - 30,000 people employed in kelp industry in highlands but lost jobs when modern chemicals were used in toothpaste instead of kelp. , Blackouses/horrible housing - Many lived in blackhouses in the North- no chimney and a single room , End of Fishing (Decline) - Crofters made £3 annually in Lewis and could make £25 fishing but the Russian Revolution led to the loss of the Herring Trade to eastern Europe. , Railways  - 1811 the first steam engine was created which allowed people to migrate much more easily. ,
