Cerebral Cortex - Motor and sensory function, intellect, and language. Contains four lobes, frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital, Frontal Lobe - Memory, Language, Judgement, Temporal Lobe - Speaking & Understanding both verbal and written language, hearing, and object recognition, Parietal Lobe - Sensory perception such as pain, temp, taste, sight, touch, Occipital Lobe - Visual Function, helping to see and identify objects we see, Precentral Gyrus - Located in the frontal lobe, and controls motor function on the opposite side of the body., Brain Stem - Consists of the Medulla, Midbrain, Pons, and Reticular Formation, Medulla - Controls involuntary functions such as sneezing, swallowing, vomiting, hiccoughing, and coughing, Midbrain - Contains many motor neurons, and relays information to and from the brain through ascending sensory trats and descending motor pathways, Pons - Consists of the ascending and descending neuron trats and assists the midbrain to relay information. Contains two respiratory centers. One that controls the length of inspiration and expiration and another that controls respiration rate, Reticular Formation - Responsible for increasing wakefulness, attention, and responsiveness, Cerebellum - Located under the occipital lobe, posterior part of the brain. Coordinates involuntary movement, posture, and muscle tone. Maintains overall balance and coordination, Spinal Cord - Extends from brainstem to base of Skull and down to Coccyx, Broca Area - Located in frontal lobe. Responsible for speech and processing of language. People with damage to this area can understand words, but have trouble putting words together (difficulty expressing words), Wernicke Area - Located in the temporal lobe. People with damage to this area have difficulty with comprehension of written and spoken words and difficulty with reading and wrighting , Aphasia - Can occur from brain injuries and make it difficult for people to express themselves. Use a picture board for communication, Dysphasia - Difficulty swallowing. Symptoms include drooling, coughing, or gagging, then swallowing. Chocking while eating, or a sensation of something stuck in throat or chest, Modifiable Stroke Risk Factors - Lose weight, increase physical activity and reduce sodium intake to control BP, Complications from a stroke - Dysphagia, cognitive impairment of memory, or aphasia. Incontinence, paralysis or decreased mobility, pneumonia, depression, Stroke Assessment - ACT FAST - Facial Drop (have them smile), Arm numbness/decreased mobility, speech is slurred. Time ACT FAST,
