Canada had 2 full time agents in 1892 and 5 by 1897, Some Scots emigrated to find their fortune in gold. 5000 highlanders left at the same time and many went to Australia when it was discovered in 1851, Transportaion imporved with the development of the steamship so people were encouraged to emigrate as it was affordable and easier to return. , The Empire Settlement Act of 1922 encouraged many to emigrate and gave £3million to assist with travel costs and accommodation, The opportunity for cheap or free land in Canada encouraged migration as they could become landowners, Letters from relatives encouraged Scots to migrate for better opportunities , The Highlands and Island emigration scheme raised money and helped very poor crofters go to Australia and Canada and meant a landowner could pay £1 per tenant for settlement in Australia., Scotland was a low wage economy so many people emigrated in search of higher wages especially if they were skilled. , Cities were exciting and encouraged many to move for leisure activities such as cinemas and dance halls. , Railways encourage dmnay to move to cities in Scotland as it made it easier to travel and less expensive. ,
