We use reference words to replace and refer back to nouns and phrases that have already been used.  This avoids repetition. - I tried to open the door, but it was locked., Reference words can be subject or object pronouns. - Mary phoned this morning. She's coming home this evening. / I told her to come home this evening. , Other pronouns can also function as reference words: one/ones, here/there - I like those T-shirts. I'll take the blue one. / Paul is at the cinema. I will meet him there in 10 minutes. ,
