Altered states of consciousness - Any state of consciousness deviating from NWC (level of awareness, perceptions, memories, thinking, emotions, behaviours, sense of time, place and self-control); can be deliberately induced or occur naturally., Arousal - Psychological state of being physically awake and alert., Attention - Narrowing the focus of awareness to a stimulus of interest., Automatic processes - Processes requiring little attention and thought; can allow you to do two things at once., Awareness - How conscious we are of internal and/or external events; can vary in NWC., Consciousness - Awareness of own thoughts, feelings and perceptions (internal events) and surroundings (external events) at any given moment., Continuum of awareness - Levels of awareness that can be experienced, from deep unconsciousness to heightened awareness, on a continuous scale including NWC and ASC., Controlled processes - Processes requiring mental effort to focus attention on the required task., Daydreaming - Private thoughts, feelings and imagined scenarios that occur when we shift attention internally while ignoring the outside world; often visualised thoughts (positive and pleasurable); occur naturally and often; mostly considered an ASC., Divided attention - Ability to attend to and perform multiple activities at the same time., Hyperarousal - ASC of heightened awareness., Normal waking consciousness - States of consciousness experienced when awake and aware of thoughts, feelings and perceptions from internal events and surrounding environment; experience a real sense of time and place and create reality and baseline to judge all other states of consciousness., Psychological constructs - Hypothetical concepts created to explain phenomena believed to exist or occur, but cannot be directly observed or measured., Selective attention - Ability to focus on only select stimuli or objects in the environment and filter out other distractions., Selective inattention - Way we attend to (or do not) info that may be relevant but emotionally upsetting., States of consciousness - Individual's level of awareness of internal events (thoughts, feelings, perceptions) and external surroundings., Stream of consciousness - Analogy, termed by William James, explaining consciousness as an ever-changing stream of thoughts that can shift smoothly and effortlessly from one moment to the next, like water in a stream.,
