VERSE - A single line of poetry., RHYME - The repetition of the same or similar sounds occurs in two or more words, usually at the end of lines in poems or songs., RHYME SCHEME - The pattern of rhyme that comes at the end of each verse or line in poetry., END RHYME - Rhymes at the end of lines., INTERNAL RHYME - Rhymes within lines., STANZA - An arrangement of a certain number of lines, usually four or more, forming a division of a poem; separate by a space; The paragraph of poetry., REFRAIN - A poetic device that repeats, at regular intervals, in different stanzas., METER - Meter is a stressed and unstressed syllabic pattern in a verse, or within the lines of a poem; a poetic device that serves as a sound pattern for the verses; gives poetry a rhythmical and melodious sound., COMPLETE RHYME - Rhyme in which the final accented vowel and all succeeding consonants or syllables are identical, while the preceding consonants are different., PARTIAL RHYME - A rhyme in which the stressed syllables of ending consonants match, however the preceding vowel sounds do not match., ODE - A kind of poem, usually praising something; a form of lyric poetry - expressing emotion - and it's usually addressed to someone or something, or it represents the poet's musings on that person or thing., HAIKU - A major form of Japanese verse, written in 17 syllables divided into 3 lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, and employing allusions and comparisons, often on the subject of nature or one of the seasons., FREE VERSE - Poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm and does not rhyme with fixed forms., NARRATIVE - A poem which tells a story. It has a full storyline with all the elements of a traditional story. These elements include characters, plot, conflict, resolution, setting, and action., ACROSTIC - An acrostic poem is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase. Typically, the first letters of each line are used to spell the message, but they can appear anywhere., BALLAD - A type of poem that is sometimes set to music. The ballad actually began as a folk song and continues today in popular music. Many love songs today can be considered ballads; the rhyme scheme is often ABAB because of the musical quality of this rhyme pattern., SONNET - In poetry, a sonnet has 14 lines, and is written in iambic pentameter. Each line has 10 syllables. It has a specific rhyme scheme, and a volta, or a specific turn., ELEGY - A sad poem, usually written to praise and express sorrow for someone who is dead. Although a speech at a funeral is a eulogy, you might later compose an elegy to someone you have loved and lost to the grave.,
