1 - The play opens on an unhappy scene: a poorly furnished country kitchen where Nanna and Mena Glavin swap insults. Nanna complains of the bad ‘bargain’ her family got when Mena married her son, 2 - When Sive arrives home it is clear that Mena has a tense relationship with her sister-in-law; she resents that Sive is still attending school at eighteen and not contributing to the house., 3 - Sive questions her grandmother about her parents., 4 - Unknown to Sive and Nanna, the matchmaker Thomasheen Seán Rua enters and proposes that Mena marry the girl to Seán Dóta, an elderly bachelor who will pay well for the match and also take Nanna into his house., 5 - Mike dislikes the idea, but at the close of the scene he catches Liam Scuab, Sive’s admirer, on a secret visit to the house., 6 - Thomasheen brings Seán Dóta to visit the house. Seán behaves bashfully, performing a foolish song for his young bride. Yet when sent to walk Sive to a neighbouring cottage, he attempts to sexually assault her., 7 - Mike is still reluctant to agree to the match, but Thomasseen Sean Rua plays on his fears about Liam Scuab, 8 - Pats Bocock and Carthalawn arrive & are welcomed to the house by Nana. Mena doesn't like them, 9 - Pats Bocock and Carthalawn reveal news of Sive's match to Nana., 10 - Nana confronts Mena and Thomasheen but she gets bullied by them to voice no further objections, 11 - Mena tries to convince Sive to agree to the match, but when she doesn't Mena reveals that Sive is illegitimate & will not be married to anyone acceptable as a result., 12 - Liam tries to stop the match, but Mena & Mike ignore him, 13 - Mena tells Sive that Liam Scuab wishes her well on her marriage. Sive believes Liam has forsaken her., 14 - Pats Bocock and Carthalawn arrange a plan for Sive & Liam to run away together and give Nana a letter with the details, 15 - Nana trusts Mike with the letter, but Thomasheen convinces Mike to read it before giving it to Sive. The letter is burnt., 16 - Pats Bocock and Carthalawn arrive for a pre wedding performance & as a distraction for Sive's escape., 17 - Mena discovers Sive is missing., 18 - Liam arrives with Sive's lifeless body. She has drown herself in a boghole rather than get married to Sean Dota,
