Aim - To see whether alcoholism could be explained in terms of hereditary factors. , Type of study - Case study, Sample - 174 male twin pairs from Skane in Sweden. Kaij classified 48 as identical (MZ) and 126 as non-identical (DZ) where at least one twin was registered with the temperance board., Data collection - Interviews with those twins registered with the temperance board and with close relatives to collect information about drinking habits and whether they were MZ or DZ twins., Results - 61% of the identical twins were both alcoholic whereas only 39% of the non-identical twins were both alcoholic. Also those twins who had social problems were most likely to be registered with the temperance board., Conclusion - Alcoholism is related to hereditary factors but the increased social problems also show that there are environmental factors that contribute to alcoholism, Temperance board - A register in Sweden to follow individuals who had alcohol abuse, Genetic vulnerability - Genes do not determine a disorder, they increase an individual's risk of a disorder, Hereditary factors - The genetic information that is passed from one generation to the next., MZ twins - Monozygotic twins that share 100% of their DNA, DZ twins - Dizygotic twins that share 50% of their DNA,
