virtual memory - area of hard disc to store memory as if it was ram, RAM - random access memory, ROM - read only memory, flash memory - storing data electronically (memory cards), cache memory - small memory in the cpu, solid state drive - stores data in electronic circuits , magnetic storage - storage that uses the surface to store data, internal storage - storage built into the computer (on motherboard), boot program - program used to start the computer  (automatically loaded), clock speed - speed the processor carries out instructions, ascii - 7bit character code, unicode - 16bit character code (includes emojis and all languages), malware - any program designed to be harmful , firewall - monitors traffic between computer and internet and only allows authorised, hub - sends data around a network, but sends it to all devices, NIC - network interface card/controller , topology - layout of the network, peer to peer - A network where each device is equal, client server - A network where there is a central computer, router - connects all networks e.g. a LAN to the Internet, domain name server - looks up an IP address from a web address, protocol  - rules/standards for a device to communicate, internet - international network of networks, data protection act - 1998 law to stop abuse of personal information, computer misuse act - 1990 law to stop hacking etc, freedom of information act - 2000 law to allow people to see data from public authorities, copyrights designs and patents act - 1988 law to protect intellectual property, switch - an intelligent device that sends and receives data packets on a network, MAC address - Hex code for a network device - cannot be changed, IP address - Used to route data around the internet - e.g. 255.255.255.108,
