1. Jonas lay on the bed and felt only the light touch of the old man’s hands on his back. Suddenly the air became cold, and tiny soft flakes brushed his skin. Even with his eyes closed, he could see swirling snow. He realized he was sitting on a sled at the top of a hill., The sled began to move, sliding downhill faster and faster. Jonas felt joy, speed, and the sharp cold air. Finally the sled slowed and stopped in a pile of snow. When Jonas opened his real eyes, he was back in the Annex room. The old man explained that the memory was now gone from him because he had given it to Jonas., Jonas asked why their community no longer had snow, hills, or sleds. The old man told him about Climate Control and Sameness, which removed things that made life difficult or unpredictable., Then Jonas received another memory: warmth and bright light from above. He recognized it as sunshine. At the end, the old man gave him a small painful memory — a sunburn. Jonas understood that some memories would involve pain., When the session ended, the old man looked tired. Jonas thanked him and shyly asked his name. The old man replied, “Call me The Giver.”.
