Deserts : This is a very dry place that does not get much rainfall., It is made up of sand and rock., It is very hot during the day and very cold at night., Some animals are nocturnal and sleep in shady spots or burrows during the day., Some plants have long roots that get water from underground., Grasslands : Large, open areas covered almost entirely by grass., They are found between deserts and forests., They can be very cold in winter and very hot in summer., Most plant life is grass; some trees and shrubs grow too., Home to many grazing animals like zebras and bison., Rainforests: This place has many tall trees and receives a lot of rainfall., It is hot and very humid., This place has four layers and they are called the forest floor, the understory, the canopy, and the emergent layer., More than half of the world’s species of plants and animals live here., Tundra: Flat, treeless plains covered in snow most of the year., The ground contains a layer of frozen soil called permafrost., Common plants: willow, poppy, mosses, grasses, low shrubs., Many animals have thick fur, short legs, and wide feet to keep warm., Some animals migrate to warmer areas during winter.,
