Villagers gather in the square on the morning of 27th June; the boys pile up stones., Mr. Summers arrives with the old black box., The official call the heads of the families in alphabetical order., The head of each family draws a folded slip; everyone opens them together., Bill Hutchinson has the marked slip - his family is chosen., Tessie protests that it “wasn’t fair”; the family draws again, one slip each., Tessie draws the paper with the black spot., The villagers pick up the stones and close in on her., Tessie is stoned to death, still shouting “It isn’t fair.”
