The Night Everything Changed, On 26 April 1986, something surprising and hard to believe happened in a small town in Ukraine. A nuclear power station near the city of Chernobyl exploded, and it became one of the worst nuclear accidents in history., At first, many people didn’t understand what was happening. The government did not tell the truth immediately, which was not behaving in the same honest way towards everyone. Families continued their normal lives until they started to feel sick or saw strange smoke in the sky., That night, one teenage boy who was not dependent on anyone else, called Sergei, was taking care of his old grandmother while his parents were working at the power station. He tried to stay calm and act bravely, but inside he was very scared., The next day, soldiers came to their town and told everyone to leave. They said people should put only the most important things into their bags. It was difficult for Sergei to decide what to take. It was a difficult choice: family photos, clothes, or his personal belongings?, Sergei tried to explain to his grandmother that they had to leave, but she said it all seemed like a terrible dream. Before leaving, Sergei closed the door of their house with a key, even though he knew they might never return., During the evacuation, Sergei’s best mate Sasha promised to support him no matter what. They agreed to keep in touch and not tell anyone about how scared they really were, because they didn’t want to upset their parents., Sergei and his family had to live in a small, untidy apartment with another family. Using a kitchen together with strangers and cleaning the plates was difficult, but they had no choice., At school, some children from other cities would make fun of the evacuated kids and call them “radioactive.” Sergei found this very irritating and hurtful., Years later, Sergei began to understand how dangerous the situation had really been. He learned that many firefighters and workers had died while trying to stop the radiation. Now that he is older, he understands why his parents had been so worried and why they had never told him everything at the time., As an adult, Sergei decided to share his story with students and journalists from other countries. He believed it was necessary for young people to learn about Chernobyl so that such a disaster would never happen again.
