Can you briefly explain what your research is about?, My research examines how a positive image of the future and civic identity affect psychological adaptation to difficult conditions. Specifically, I am looking at whether these factors help people cope with stress in war‑affected areas. I am comparing two groups: people living near the front line and people living far from the conflict., Why did you choose this topic?, I chose this topic because it is both academically important and socially relevant. Many people are currently living under extreme stress due to conflict, and I wanted to understand what psychological resources help them cope. I believe that civic identity – a sense of belonging to one's country – and a positive vision of the future are two such resources. I also think the findings could be useful for designing psychological support programmes., What is the main hypothesis of your study?, My main hypothesis is that people with a stronger civic identity and a more positive image of the future will show better psychological adaptation to stressful conditions. I also predict that these effects will be stronger for people living near the front line than for those living far from the conflict, because the coping resources are needed more in highly stressful situations., How are you conducting your research? What methods are you using?, I am using a mixed‑methods approach. First, I am conducting large‑scale quantitative research through questionnaires. I am collecting data from two groups: people living near the front line and people living in regions far from the conflict. The questionnaires measure civic identity, positive image of the future, stress levels and overall psychological adaptation. In addition, I am doing semi‑structured interviews with a smaller sample to get a deeper understanding of how people experience these coping resources., Why did you choose these methods?, I chose quantitative methods because they allow me to collect data from a large number of people and identify statistical patterns. I also wanted to be able to compare the two groups. However, I added qualitative interviews because numbers alone do not tell the full story. Interviews allow me to understand the personal experiences behind the statistics, such as how people actually use civic identity and future vision to cope with stress in their daily lives., What is your sample? Who are your participants?, My sample consists of adults from two regions of Ukraine. One group lives in areas close to the front line, where they experience regular shelling and disruption to daily life. The other group lives in regions far from the conflict, such as western Ukraine. I am trying to ensure that the groups are similar in terms of age, gender and socio‑economic background, so that any differences can be attributed to the living conditions rather than other factors., What do you expect to find? What are your predictions?, I expect to find that people with a stronger civic identity and a more positive image of the future will report lower stress levels and better psychological adaptation overall. I also predict that the effect will be stronger in the front‑line group, because they need coping resources more urgently. However, I suspect that civic identity might be more important for one group, while a positive image of the future might be more important for the other., What would happen if your hypothesis is not supported?, If my hypothesis is not supported, it would still be an interesting result. It would suggest that other factors – perhaps family support, personal resilience or social networks – are more important for psychological adaptation than civic identity or a positive vision of the future. This would also be valuable knowledge, because it would point researchers in a different direction and help identify other resources that are more effective for coping with stress., What are the limitations of your study?, There are several limitations. First, my sample is limited to one country, so the results may not be generalisable to other populations. Second, the cross‑sectional design means I cannot establish causality – I cannot say for certain that civic identity causes better adaptation. Third, questionnaires rely on self‑report, so responses may be biased. However, the qualitative interviews help address some of these issues by providing richer data., What are the practical implications of your research?, My research could be used to design better psychological support programmes for people in conflict zones. If civic identity and a positive image of the future are confirmed as protective factors, then interventions could be developed to strengthen these resources – for example, through educational programmes, community events or media campaigns that promote a shared national identity and a vision of a better future. My research could also be relevant for policymakers working on social cohesion and mental health in crisis situations., How could your research be applied in practice?, One practical application would be to develop community‑based programmes that strengthen civic identity, such as civic education projects or community events that bring people together. Another would be to create media content that promotes a positive vision of the future – for example, through public service announcements or social media campaigns. My research could also help mental health professionals design interventions that incorporate these resources, such as group therapy sessions that focus on building resilience through shared identity and hope., What are your plans for future research?, In the future, I would like to expand the research to include other countries affected by conflict, to see whether the findings are similar across different cultural contexts. I am also interested in conducting a longitudinal study – following the same participants over time – to understand how civic identity and future vision develop and change, and how they affect adaptation over time. I would also like to develop an intervention programme based on my findings and test whether strengthening these resources actually improves psychological adaptation.
