I woke with a jolt. Something was wrong. I was lying still, trying to work out, and then I realised the thing that was trembling was my bed. Where was I? What was happening? I sat upright and my head hit something hard. My heart froze and I started to panic., It took me a few seconds to accept that the art deco walls around me were not from my bedroom. The window did not look out on the old oak tree. Indeed, the view was completely unstable. There were trees, but they were blurred, rushing past in a rate of knots. And above me my twin sister was still asleep in her bunk bed, gently rocked by rhythmic motions., I scrambled out of my bunk and started to stare through the window like a child on a first journey. But this travel was no ordinary. The view was breathtaking. I could see the front carriages bending round the track as we approached a tunnel and the excitement was electric. The swaying blue and gold carriages sported the glossy emblems of the Orient Express. Evie and I were on a birthday trip, gifted by our family, on one of the most famous trains in the world., ‘I still have to pinch myself, Jazz,’ Evie was swinging her legs from the top bunk, her feet tapping my shoulders. The carriages were restored originals and therefore narrow, but the rest of the decor exuded luxury. The whole train did definitely not a budget trip., The first leg of the journey saw us hurtle through France. Now we were snaking our way through the Alps, in our luxurious compartment, glamour on every side., ‘Yeah – it’s like stepping back in time or into Murder on the Orient Express,’ by Agatha Christie, I whispered. I could nearly see the wonderful detective Hercule Poirot – the main character of the book – interviewing elegantly attired suspects in the Orient Express dining car about a murder that happened in one of the compartments. And that was when we entered the tunnel that had shadowed hours off the original journey time. The train suddenly screeched to a halt. My heart froze for a second time..
