Today I’d like to speak about different approaches to taking food in Britain and Ukraine., Both countries have very interesting eating habits and traditions, so if you don’t mind, I’d like to share my knowledge with you., In Great Britain there are no strict rules when we speak about meals, but still the British have some traditions., So, the traditional British breakfast consists of bacon, ham or sausages, fried or boiled eggs, some porridge, cornflakes, toast, jam, a cup of coffee or strong tea., Certainly, some people don’t like the idea of having too much food in the morning and prefer to eat a slice of bread and butter, a boiled egg, some fruit and drink a glass of juice., Between 12 and 1.30 p.m. the British have their lunch., For many people, lunch is a quick meal., In cities, there are a lot of bars, where office workers can choose the kind of bread they want - brown, white, or a roll - and then all sorts of salad and meat or fish to put into the sandwich., Pubs often serve good, cheap food, both hot and cold., Schoolchildren can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a snack from home - a sandwich, a drink, some fruit, and perhaps some crisps., At midday, from 1.30 till 2.30, the British have their dinner., Some people eat their dinner rather late: from 6.30 to 8.00 p.m., Then they call it “supper”., It depends upon their views., It is the main meal of the day., It may consist of several courses, such as roast meat, chops, beefsteaks, accompanied by vegetables., In Britain, the most common kinds of meat are beef, chicken, lamb and pork., The most popular vegetables are potatoes, cabbages, onions, peas, carrots and tomatoes., After the main course, there is a sweet pie or a pudding., The so-called “five-o’clock tea” means two things., It is a drink and a meal!, The British have it between five and six p.m., Traditional “five-o’clock” usually consists of ham, sausages, tinned salmon, bread, butter, cheese, caviar (it depends on the budget), buns, cakes, pies, different kinds of pastries with cream, stewed and tinned fruit: apples, apricots, pears, pineapples and so on., They serve everything with terribly strong tea!, Of course, it is not available for everybody and every day., Such meals are common for people of high rank., They invite guests and spend a few hours sitting at a table and chatting., The usual meals in Ukraine are breakfast, dinner and supper., In general, Ukrainians eat a light breakfast., It can be bread with butter served with coffee or tea, or pastries., Cereal, buckwheat, barley with milk may also be served., Their main meal is around mid-afternoon and usually consists of soup, such as borshch and a dish with meat or poultry., The third meal of the day takes place around 6 or 7 p.m. It is usually a time when all family members get together.
