It does NOT mean exactly what the words say., Simile, A comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as”., Metaphor, A direct comparison saying one thing IS another (no “like” or “as”)., Personification, Giving human qualities/feelings to non-human things, Hyperbole, Extreme exaggeration for emphasis or humor (not meant literally)., Idiom, A fixed expression with a meaning different from the literal words, Onomatopoeia, Words that imitate the sound they describe., Alliteration, Repetition of the same beginning sound in nearby words, Oxymoron, Two opposite words combined for effect, Synecdoche, Using a part to represent the whole (or whole for part)., Understatement (or Litotes), Saying less than what is true, to be modest or ironic.
